Theme:
The theme of the book The Lost Names is very closely connected with the previous two topics: Character/Plot Developement and Setting. This is because the theme itself creats settings, that leads to plot developement on its own. And the plot developement automatically causes character to develope to adjust to that plot and setting. The theme of this book is Japanese Intervention involving the conflict that arises between the Korean liberation forces and Japanese emperial forces.
Japanese Intervention is the period in the early 1900s, sepecifically 1910 to 1945 when Korean civil rights, nationality, and culture was opressed by Japanese government. Many Koreans were put under forced labor, or harsh working conditions. This put on end to Joseon dynasty, and when Korean government was formed by Kim Gu, it had to go through the shame of having our own government in China, constantly moving around in multiple cities. The liberation forces involved acts of passive resistances, assasination, and even military conflicts to drive out Japanese or to remove key actors of those who acted for the opression of Korean Rights. Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea was formed around Kim Gu, first president of Republic of Korea after WWII.
After World War II which ended with U.S. and Western powers' favor, bringing U.S. and U.S.S.R. as the world's two unchallenged major power. After World War II, Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea who was under constant support from U.S. was put incharge of Korea under 38th parrell by U.S. and North under control of the comunist forces of U.S.S.R. Later, China became under communist government after a long civil war, and Democratic forces were pushed down to Republic of China or more commonly known as Taiwan.
The thingy kind'a got long, but in short terms the Theme is the period when Korea was under Japanese rule, the period itself.

I have gotten alot of insight from reading others posts on this book. Yes, the theme is of that time period I would agree, but would it not also have something to do with Japanese opression and Koreans ridding them selves of it. I just posted on Hanji's blog on how the Korean's just kind'a "Lost" thier will to win. The Japanese had complete rule over them. I am not sure, this book is confuzing. Well, have fun on vacation.

I think that you're right that the book deals a lot with character developement and setting, but I also think that there might be a deeper theme, hidden underneath those broad topics. I like how you explain the Japanese occupation and everything because I don't think I knew that much about it before. Great job with the blogs!! I think that this was a really good book to read and it really gave me know more about what Korean people really went through in this time.
